What is return on investment or ROI?
Return on investment, or RoI in short, is a ratio that measures the effectiveness of an investment. Expressed as a percentage, it is measured by dividing the amount of profit you make from selling an investment by the amount of money you initially paid to acquire that investment. RoI is also used to compare the effectiveness of several investment opportunities. If the estimated RoI of an investment is positive, it indicates that you can consider making that investment. On the other hand, an estimated negative RoI is a sign that the investment may not be undertaken. While comparing RoIs of various investments, the highest estimated RoI is mostly preferred over the others.
However, while estimating RoI, since some element of subjectivity is involved, the process can be easily manipulated. So it's very important to have a clear and practical view of the various assumptions that are being made to calculate RoI.
