Dividend Distribution Tax (DDT) from 1 October 2014
From 1 October the dividend distribution tax (DDT) on debt funds will rise to 28.32% for retail investors, higher than the 22.07% they paid earlier. To avoid the DDT, investors should opt for the growth option and start a systematic withdrawal plan (SWP) from the mutual fund for a regular income. The redemption of units will lead to a capital gains tax on the income, but the investor can avail of the indexation benefit if the holding period exceeds three years. During times of high inflation, indexation can effectively reduce the capital gains tax to nil.
