A bank safe deposit locker
The safe deposit locker facility is one of the subsidiary services provided by a bank for keeping valuables safe. The relationship between the bank and the customer is that of a lessor and lessee.
This is why the closure of a locker is referred to as `surrender'. The locker can be surrendered by the hirer(s) at any time during the contract period. They will have to surrender it if they want to change the location of their locker from one branch to another or shift from the bank with which they have the locker.The hirers may also close it in case they want to consolidate their lockers. Even the bank can request for surrender by offering due notice.
Emptying locker
The hirer must ensure that the contents of the locker are removed before initiating the proceedings for surrendering the locker.
Application
The hirer should write a letter to the manager of the branch in which the locker is located. He should mention the locker number and personal details, such as name, address and phone number. The letter should be signed by the hirer.
Returning the key
The hirer must return the locker key to the branch manager. If the key has been lost, the bank follows a procedure for issuing duplicate keys, including penalities, if any, before initiating the process for closing the locker.
Acknowledgement After completing all the formalities, the branch manager will issue an acknowledgement, confirming that the locker has been successfully closed.
Points to note
Applications for closure of jointly held lockers must be signed by all the holders. When the locker is surrendered at the request of the hirer, the charges for the unutilised period, if any, are refunded for the remaining complete quarters only.
